Do you dream of running away to the circus? If you live in New York, you’ll need to do some paperwork: You’ll need your photo ID, proof of insurance and an E29 fire performer’s license from the @fdny. “The licensing process itself is about as sexy as applying for a mortgage,” writes Ilise S. Carter, who performs under the state name the Lady Aye. She wrote about her #fireeating career for this Sunday’s @ニューヨーク・タイムズ. The process, she says, is more complicated than it used to be in NYC. Since the beginning of the year, all fire performers wishing to work in the city must be trained and licensed. Ilise describes her “foolish nostalgia for the Wild West days,” when fire eating was less regulated. Today, she uses her skills where the money is — in bottle-service clubs and at bar mitzvahs. “Even there, I mainly work as a sword swallower — the equipment is easier to carry on the subway, and venues worry less about my body than their upholstery.” @jtaggfoto captured Lady Aye eating fire last weekend. #?
