candles just wouldn't cut it this morning - chasing away a heavy wooly grey morning with the first fire of the season - apple wood, from one of the old trees at the farm which finally surrendered last season. now, after a year's curing the aromatic little logs are ready for the hearth. they caught easily and the bright flames were welcomingly mesmerizing. I stepped outside, standing in the same spot I did last night to view the moon, & inhaled - sweet smoky perfume on the otherwise cold still air - that is the smell of new england
