In Ronald K. Brown’s ravishing “Grace,” which he choreographed for @alvinailey in 1999, God is a woman. But @lindacelestesims, the soulful dancer who performs the part, thinks of it more as an angelic spirit: “There’s smoke onstage when I come out and it’s as if I’m still in heaven,” she told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk. “I feel like I’m like dancing on a cloud.” The work starts out with an imploring, lustrous solo, during which @lindacelestesims swivels her hips, raises her arms and looks above. “There’s still a higher being,” she said. “It’s not just me. I’m looking at God and I say a prayer to him.” As the solo progresses she swirls her hand in front of her body and looks down, as if gazing at people on earth and asking, “Why is there so much pain?” This season at @alvinailey honors #RonaldKBrown, a talented and prolific choreographer, who has been making dances for the group for 20 years. “You know how we say in the dance world that you have to be ‘full-out’ — that you have to dance hard?” @lindacelestesims said. “That’s not what he wants.
