@victorjblue took this photo last week at Chasm, what was supposed to be a 4-day art event at an industrial space in Bushwick, Brooklyn, that was cut short when organizers feared it would be raided. Ever since a fire killed 36 people at a warehouse party in Oakland, California, earlier this month, New York City officials have been policing similar events with renewed vigor. To throw a legal party in an NYC warehouse, organizers must apply for a permit from the city’s Buildings Department. The agency notifies @fdny, which then inspects the site. Not all pass muster. But in expensive cities like New York, running legitimate galleries and dance clubs, or bringing existing ones up to code, requires deeper pockets than most artists have. So in industrial pockets of Brooklyn, pop-up parties in the shells of ancient factories or abandoned hospitals thrive. To Brooklyn’s DIY community, the new attention seems more like scapegoating than safety. But city officials maintain that these safety regulations are meant to preserve life, not neglect culture.
