Your phone can make your face whiter. A touch can taper your jaw or widen your eyes. And, of course, it can make you thinner. In China, a photo app called Meitu gives its users the power to create idealized versions of themselves. “Our mission is to make the world a more beautiful place,” its makers say. Meitu is tailored toward a standard of (mostly female) beauty that’s particular to China and countries like South Korea and Japan. Like money, education and a good job, beauty is something you can aspire to. In China, sales of beauty and personal care products grew by more than half between 2010 and 2015. Meanwhile, cosmetic surgery has boomed — and people under 35 are the main customers. One motivator could be the prevalence of apps that encourage people to scrutinize their photos. Meitu and its related apps have 446 million users, and now the company hopes its services will have appeal abroad. The question: Does the world want Meitu’s idea of beauty? @giuliamarchiphoto took this picture of a woman getting fake eyelashes in Beijing.
