“There’s always been a desire in my own life to be scared again,” said @joshgroban, a household name who’s sold more than 30 million records worldwide. When he began talking to the producers and creators behind a Broadway-bound musical, it became clear he’d need to learn a few things. “I knew it would shake me up a little bit, and that was exciting to me,” he told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ. In the musical, “Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812,” @joshgroban plays Pierre, an unhappy Russian aristocrat who’s often drunk. Pierre, as it turns out, plays the accordion. @joshgroban, however, plays the piano and drums. And so for months before rehearsals began, the creative team behind the musical attempted to retrain the superstar. The challenge of being convincing is especially acute, too, with the show’s action taking place amid the seats. Because @joshgroban tours nonstop to support his booming recording career, the musical director, Or Matias, chased him around the world to help him master the show’s electro-pop score. The pop star also tackled the accordion. He worked on changing his normally-angelic voice. He let his hair and beard grow out. He found a slower walk. And reluctantly, he learned to dance. @richterfit photographed #JoshGroban at the Imperial Theater in Manhattan, where he stars in “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812.”
