Julio Reyes was 13 years old when he was placed in foster care. He eventually ended up in the custody of his aunt, where he took on a parental role for many of his siblings. “If you go back and ask my brothers and sister who raised them, they would tell you it was me,” Julio said. His plans beyond high school were murky, but with the encouragement of a college counselor, Julio was accepted at @bmcc_cuny. He balanced his studies with 2 jobs: one for a moving company and the other as a waiter at a diner. “Sleeping was not a thing,” Julio said. He went on to attend @binghamtonu, where he has been taking classes since 2015. Julio is working toward his degree in accounting and expected to graduate in May 2018. @hezzikia photographed Julio rehearsing a routine with the campus dance team, Quimbamba, before a performance in November. | @childrensaidnyc, one of the 8 organizations supported by The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ Neediest Cases Fund, helped Julio buy his school books for his first spring semester.
