These brothers are a unit, joined by blood and tragedy. Their single mother was 37 when she died in 2008 from colon cancer. It happened 2 days before Thanksgiving, and it was hard for the 2 young men to understand what they had to be thankful for. Jamal Perry, right, was then 16, and Andre Steinberg was 19. Not long afterward, they moved together into the Bronx apartment they still share. For the most part, they have shaped their lives together, propping each other up. Each is the best person the other knows. But they’re prepared for separation. “We can’t stay together forever,” Jamal said. “Even if our mother would have wanted that.” Andre told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ: “It’s getting to that point where we have to fly, but alone.” He said their mother used to say that “if you wait on someone to help you, you’ll wait forever.” Amir Levy photographed Andre and Jamal at home in the Bronx last month. | Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New York, one of the 8 organizations supported by The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ Neediest Cases Fund, helped the brothers buy some furniture for their apartment.
