#regram from @nytarchives | Mary Tyler Moore, who starred in one of the most popular shows in TV history and helped define a new vision of womanhood, died on Wednesday at 80. The actress first rose to prominence on “The Dick Van Dyke Show.” But she was known best as the incomparably spunky Mary Richards on the CBS hit sitcom “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Her portrayal — for which she won 4 of her 7 Emmy Awards — expressed both the exuberance and the melancholy of the single career woman. Our staff photographer Jack Manning took this photo of #MaryTylerMoore on January 21, 1980, about 3 years after the show ended. At the time, Mary was preparing for her Broadway debut as a quadriplegic who wanted to die in “Whose Life Is It, Anyway?” Before Mary, the role was played by a male actor. In an article that ran just a few days after this portrait was taken, @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reported that “Mary was conscious of the attention drawn by the rare choice of a woman for what was once a man’s role but said it was ‘too draining of your energies’ to dwell on that.” She went on to win a Tony Award for her performance in the play.
