A Southern Right Whale glides through the frigid, sub-Antarctic waters of New Zealand’s Auckland Islands during the wintertime. The creature pictured here totaled more than 30-feet in length and likely weighed over 50 tons (100,000 pounds!). Swimming with these beautiful animals in such a remote place was a surreal experience.

North Atlantic Right Whales, cousins of the whale photographed here, are the most endangered whales on the planet - with only about 500 remaining. Though the Southern Rights are also endangered, their populations have increased since the whaling days due to increased regulation and geographic distance from shipping industry. Photographed on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック Magazine.
