There’s no “right” way to play the World Peace Game. When public school teacher John Hunter created it in 1978, his goal was to teach his 4th graders the concept of peace. Students are each assigned a role (such as Prime Minister, Secretary of Defense, Saboteur, and more), and they must communicate and collaborate in order to resolve conflicts – and sometimes a bit of compassion is required, too. For example, if they decide to go to war, they must write a letter to the parents of any toy soldier lost in battle. Each round is entirely unpredictable, and there are many things that can go wrong, but John lets his students take the lead. “I don't try to deny my students that reality of being human. I allow them to learn through their own experience, in a bloodless way, how not to do what they consider to be the wrong thing,” he says. “They find out what is right their own way.” •
In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we’re highlighting some of our favorite #TEDTalks from African-American speakers. To learn more about the World Peace Game and hear adorable stories about kids playing, watch John’s talk at go.ted.com/worldpeacegame
