Welcome to Dawson, a town at the northernmost end of the Klondike Highway in Canada’s Yukon Territory. This subarctic community, usually called Dawson City, was deemed the “Paris of the North” for its role in the gold rush of the 1890s. In early February, @ashadamsphoto traveled there while on assignment for @nytimessports. Times have changed, though; @ashadamsphoto wasn't going for the gold — instead, she was in search of dogs. Dawson is a rest stop on the #Yukon Quest, a dogsled race that spans 1,000 miles between Whitehorse, Yukon’s capital, and Fairbanks, Alaska. All @officialyukonquest mushers have to spend 36 hours in Dawson, a town of about 1,300 people where the tourism industry relies largely on the city’s history. In warmer weather, visitors can pan for gold and tour mines. In winter, mushers arrive with chapped skin and spend a day and a half at a campground, walking dogs, feeding dogs and massaging dogs. This #nytweekender, we’re sharing @ashadamsphoto’s pictures from #DawsonCity.
