Sara Cox wore this Navy Nurse Corps cape during her service in World War I. She was one of 19 fellow nurses who became the first cohort of the Navy Nurse Corps, earning them the nickname "the Sacred Twenty." During World War I, she served as a chief nurse stationed in New York from January 1914 to February 1916. She served in Washington, D.C., between February 1916 and August 1921.

Something is missing from the cape, however. Click the link in our blog (http://s.si.edu/ww1cape) to learn more.
Images 3 and 4 courtesy of Library of Congress. The cape is a gift of the Navy Department through The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America.
