Artist @lynetteyiadomboakye created the seventeen paintings for her new exhibition "Under-Song For A Cipher" in just a few months. The works embrace many of the conventions of historical European portraiture, but these subjects are purely fictional. The characters brought to life in her works are almost always black, and—in part because of the artist’s style and medium—they call to mind the absence of people of color from centuries of European painting and attest to the enduring relevance of black portraiture. With lyrical, ambiguous titles like "Vigil For A Horseman" and "Of All the Seasons," Yiadom-Boakye seems to underscore that her figures are ciphers for the viewer’s imagination and are open to a range of narratives, memories, and interpretations. See the paintings in person through September 3. [Photo: Leandro Justen/BFA.com]
