#regram from @nytarchives | “Fossilized ring-shaped cakes resembling doughnuts have been unearthed in Native American settlements dating back 8,000 years,” @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reported last year. Our article suggested that this discovery “makes doughnuts something of a national treasure,” and deserving of a #NationalDoughnutDay. The tradition — unlike other food holidays, which don’t mean much — dates back to 1917, when @salvationarmyus volunteers delivered #doughnuts to American soldiers serving on the battlefields of France during World War I. They accomplished this tasty task with great ingenuity, using helmets as deep fryers and spent artillery shells to create holes in the dough. Our staff photographer John C. Morris took this photo of 2 @salvationarmyus workers and a GI staging a re-enactment in 1957, the 40th anniversary of the first doughnut distribution. #Donuts #NationalDonutDay #?
