Finally had the chance to check out the group exhibition, A Decolonial Atlas: Strategies in Contemporary Art of the Americas at The Vincent Price Art Museum in Monterey Park.
This video by Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa titled 'Breve Historia de la Arquitectura en Guatemala' really made me think about the rapid changes and affects since colonization took place throughout America. The video features three dancers wearing costumes that represent historical periods modeled after three iconic structures in Guatemala: a Mayan pyramid, a colonial church, and the modernist National Bank of Guatemala then, they collide together. Here Ramírez-Figueroa examines the way architecture memorializes regimes of power—indigenous, colonialist, and modernist—and related histories of exploitation.
