The Kirishima Mountain range lies in one of the rainiest parts of Japan. During the rainy season we see precipitation virtually every day, the rush of water making the mountain streams even more beautiful. Downstream you can find Kirishima Onsenkyo, a popular hot spring village with various hotels and traditional inns offering nine large and small hot springs.

In the photo we can see the Senjojiki (literally, ‘one thousand tatami mats’) along Maruo Nature Path in Kirishima City. Composed of cooled lava some 15 meters wide and 200 meters long, the red tint is believed to come from the iron in the rock, which has been oxidized due to the acidity of the region’s hot spring water.
