You’re looking at Asian elephant poop—not the most photogenic subject—but it’s packed with lots of information.
With a fecal sample, scientists can learn the size, diet, health and reproductive status of an elephant in a completely non-invasive way. Our endocrine research lab at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute analyzes urine and fecal samples collected from elephants around the world, both in zoos and in the wild.
One three-year study looked at elephant wellbeing in human care. By analyzing hormones in urine, fecal and blood samples they learned that elephants living in social groups have better reproductive health. They also found elephants do best when they have a variety of enrichment instead of the same types of activities every day.
These findings can help zoos and others caring for elephants throughout the world. #WorldElephantDay #WeSaveSpecies
