You go to our @hirshhorn to see works of art, but you might not expect to see state-of-the-art conservation on view too.
Jean-Paul Riopelle’s "Large Triptych" (1964) is a massive work in three parts. The Canadian artist used thick, heavy swaths of paint that give it texture (called impasto)—and also weigh a lot.
The size of the piece presents a challenge as our conservation team carefully secures the paint to its canvas. They are working to get "Large Triptych" in condition to travel, and stay stable for many years to come.
