As someone who studies early American history, it's no surprise that one of my favorite objects in the wing is Stokely Sturgis's Bible, on display in the exhibition "American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith." Sturgis, a Delaware farmer, converted to Methodism in the late 1700s through the influence of an enslaved man named Richard Allen.
Moved by the church’s indictment of slaveholding, Sturgis agreed to sell Allen his freedom. Allen became a preacher and moved to Philadelphia. He later founded the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church there in 1794.

Every time I see it, Sturgis's Bible reminds me of the revolutionary potential of new ideas here in #TheNationWeBuildTogether. I hope you'll follow us as we share more highlights from the new wing throughout the week. –Jordan, @国立アメリカ歴史博物館
