Today we’re celebrating groundbreaking comic Phyllis Diller on what would have been her 100th birthday. Here she is with Bob Hope on his 1966 USO Christmas Tour of Vietnam.
In 2003, Diller wrote to the head of the Smithsonian to ask if we would be interested in collecting something of hers. "Even if I end up in the zoo or with the mammals, I will be honored," she wrote.
We went with our @国立アメリカ歴史博物館, which is now home to Diller’s gag file of 52,569 jokes, all on 3-by-5 index cards organized alphabetically by subject in a towering cabinet. Volunteers at @smithsoniantranscriptioncenter have worked to transcribe these pieces of American history to continue her legacy for the next century.
