A biologist was walking through a market in the Philippines when he discovered a fish that scientists had never documented before.
Jeff Williams of @smithsoniannmnh has spent years studying fish from around the world. He spends a lot of time at fish markets as part of a project to build a species database—something that’s important to prevent fraud in importing and labeling fish, and to protect people from eating something that’s poisonous.
This fish, now named “Acanthurus albimento,” is a colorful surgeonfish that’s about 10 to 12 inches long. It was found in a relatively remote part of the Philippines that’s frequently hit by typhoons. Scientists suspect it might be native to a small area there, rarely visited, which is how it surprised the experts.
