Here’s how ecologists at @SmithsonianEnvironment zoomed in on Monday’s #solareclipse! Scientist Whitman Miller built an “inverted spotting scope” using a #telescope, paper, cardboard and shadows to project an image of the #eclipse onto a flat surface.
Meanwhile, instruments on our weather tower tracked how much ultraviolet (UV) radiation dropped during the eclipse. The UV index went from above 6 at noon (which is high) to 0.7 at 2:42 p.m., when the partial eclipse hit its peak in Edgewater, Md. That’s roughly the same level as you’d get on a clear day, an hour before sunset.
