With a stunning headdress of stiff gold feathers, the gray crowned-crane measures 3-4 ft tall and weighs up to 8 lbs. These omnivores, which live in eastern and southern Africa, prefer grasslands near wetlands, where they can find lizards, fish, and crabs to supplement their meals of seeds and grasses. Thanks to a prehensile hind toe, the gray crowned-crane is one of only two species of crane that can roost in trees, although it usually nests along the edges of wetlands. It has the one of the largest clutch sizes among cranes, laying 2-4 pale blue eggs at a time. Due to habitat loss and hunting, this beautiful species is endangered. Threats to the gray crowned-crane’s habitat include droughts, overgrazing, agricultural pesticides, and dam construction.
