Born female, grow up to be male: all California Sheephead fish (Semicossyphus pulcher) begin life as females but may become males after reaching a certain size, between 25 and 35 cm long. The timing of the switch, though, can depend on environmental or social factors, such as the abundance of food or the relative shortage of males. For example, recreational spear fishing targets larger individuals, in effect removing the biggest males from the scene. The resulting imbalance causes the biggest females to morph into males--leading to fewer females, and lowered egg production. The species is considered vulnerable due to threats from overfishing.
