With a 60-inch train of metallic-green feathers and iridescent eyespots, the Indian peacock--also known as the blue peacock--is a stunningly beautiful animal. The peacocks raise and flutter their 200-feather trains in elaborate display for the smaller, far plainer peahens. While it’s easy to find consensus on the blue peacock’s beauty, scientists continue to debate about the function of this extraordinary--and burdensome--feature. Charles Darwin was notably perplexed, struggling to explain it through the lens of natural selection before settling on sexual selection. Evolutionary biologist Amotz Zahavi suggested the train was a “handicap,” a way for a male peacock to demonstrate superior fitness despite his beautiful but biologically costly feature.
