On this day in 1977, Voyager 1 launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard a Titan-Centaur rocket. To celebrate the 40th anniversary, NASA created these three commemorative posters.
Together with Voyager 2, Voyager 1 explored the outer planets of our solar system, and the pair became the third and fourth spacecrafts to fly beyond it, after Pioneers 10 and 11. Yet Voyager 1 almost got stuck in Earth’s orbit during its launch, coming within 3.5 seconds of running out of fuel. An incorrect mixture ratio between fuel and oxidizer in the Titan’s liquid upper stage led Centaur to spend extra fuel, leaving just barely enough to correctly eject Voyager 1. After successfully clearing Earth’s orbit, Voyager began its extraordinary journey, sending back invaluable information about Jupiter and Saturn. Then, in 2012, it became the first spacecraft to enter interstellar space, passing beyond the heliosphere (the region influenced by the dynamic properties of the Sun that are carried in the solar wind). Should Voyager 1 encounter any extraterrestrial life, it carries the Golden Record—really a photograph record—that contains 115 images, natural sounds, spoken greetings in 55 languages, and a musical selection that offer insight into who we Earthlings are.
