Clownfish are famous for their remarkable relationship with sea anemones, which have poison-producing tentacles and prey on other fish. But clownfish have a coat of mucus that protects them from the stings and allows them to nest in anemones--though first, they’ll perform a “dance” and rub against the tentacles. In return for safe shelter, the clownfish will ward off the anemone’s predators, like the butterfly fish, preen their host for parasites, and aerate its tentacles through certain movements. Clownfish waste may also provide anemones with extra nutrients. #clownfish #anemone #anemones #tentacles #reefs #oceanlife #amnh #insideamnh #naturalhistory
