That’s not seaweed or kelp you’re seeing. It’s one of nature’s most spectacularly camouflaged animals: the leafy seadragon, Phycodurus eques. This fish lives in seagrass meadows and seaweed beds, and it’s so good at blending in that it fools both prey and predators.

Along with other seadragons, seahorses, and pipefish, the leafy seadragons make up the family of fish known as Syngnathidae. Like seahorses, leafy seadragon males are the ones who carry the developing eggs--in their case, incubating more than 100 eggs in a “brood patch” of eggcups that form on their tail.
