The New World forced artists to improvise. By painting on animal hides, Spanish priests and Pueblo artisans were able to continue traditions of religious painting—despite not having access to canvases. This particular hide depicts St. Anthony of Padua with baby Jesus, and it decorated the wall of a Catholic mission in New Mexico. It was probably created sometime in the late 1600s. Due to these works' European painting styles, scholars previously believed that hides of this type were painted by Franciscans, a Roman Catholic religious order. Scholars now believe that American Indians painted them after learning and adopting the style from the Spanish and other Europeans arriving in the area. How can you identify St. Anthony? He is often represented as a Franciscan friar in a brown robe holding a child and a lily. Be sure to look at the second image to get a closer look at the artwork! #HispanicHeritageMonth #HHM2017 #ReligiousHistory #ManyVoices #NewMexicoHistory #LatinoHistory #StAnthony #AmericanIndianHistory #AmericanHistory
