Howard grew up outside of Los Angeles in a working-class, baseball-loving family of four boys, three girls, and their mother and father. His father, "Leo" Martinez was an amateur baseball player in Texas, Mexico, and Southern California for about 30 years. In the 1940s, prior to becoming a U.S. citizen, Leo played shortstop for the Mexican National Baseball Team.

To keep the kids playing their favorite sport, the family came up with some innovative solutions to worn-out gloves and broken bats. This glove was restitched at least three times to keep the kids on the field. Objects from the Martinez family are now part of our collection. Click the link in our profile (s.si.edu/baseballfixes) to hear their story and see what we've collected as part of our Latinos and Baseball Initiative. ⚾️??⚾️??⚾️ #SportsHistory #BaseballHistory #HispanicHeritage #HispanicHeritageMonth #LatinoHeritage #LatinxHeritage #LatinosInBaseball #Bisbol #CAhistory #LAhistory #LetsPlayBall #TheNationWeBuildTogether #ManyVoices @californiahistoricalsociety @discoverla @sanddawgsball
