Small creatures like this dormouse frequently arrive at the Il Pettitrosso Wildlife Rescue Center in Italy after their homes are destroyed by gardeners or farmers. Whilst the frightened adults escape, the babies who are too young to leave remain in their dens. Fortunately, they’re often rescued by volunteers. Dormice also regularly arrive at the rescue center in spring and late summer, when the owners of mountain and forest holiday homes enter to find the whole family of dormice living in the kitchen cabinets or inside the padding of the sofas. Sometimes they are gently evicted, but these little rodents are not used to forest life and would soon become a delicious prey if the Il Pettitrosso volunteers didn’t intervene. They train the creatures to find food on their own and then, when the dormice are ready, release them back into the wild.
Il Pettriosso is funded completely by donations and is run by volunteers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Their goal is to rescue, care for, and release animals back into the wild in Italy.
