This spur was collected by Father Noël Dumarest sometime between 1894 and 1900 when he was placed in charge of the Indian Pueblos of Cochiti, Santo Domingo, and San Felipe as well as several Mexican towns. Designed to be rubbed against an animal's side, spurs are one of the instruments that riders use to direct horses. ? Much of the technique and craftsmanship of riding culture that was found in the American West among both Native Americans and later U.S. settlers was introduced by the Spanish in Mexico during the 1500s. Spanish conquerors moved north of the Rio Grande hoping to find gold and silver. Instead they found modest towns where Native peoples lived in adobe houses and practiced irrigation agriculture. ? Horses and riding equipment such as spurs, saddles, and stirrups played a fundamental role in Spanish conquest, exploration, and settlement. #HispanicHeritageMonth #HHM2017 #AmericanHistory #LatinoHistory #AmericanIndianHistory #HorsebackRiding
