Not an early model of Tony Stark's Iron Man suit, this is Charles Armbruster’s Iron Lung. It kept polio patients breathing before the more familiar Emerson tank respirator was introduced in 1932. Polio can paralyze victims' lungs, making rhythmic mechanical compression of the chest necessary. During polio outbreaks, hospital wards would be filled with rows of patients, mostly children, confined to tanks which performed their breathing for them.

When the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis launched a large-scale trial of Jonas Salk's killed-virus vaccine, hundreds of thousands of parents eagerly volunteered their children, hoping to avoid the horrors of polio. This vial was produced by Eli Lilly for the 1954 trial, and the syringe was used by Dr. Salk himself.

At age six, Mark O'Brien woke up with a sharp pain in his stomach and his parents took him to the hospital. When he woke up, he remembers, "I was lying in a strange machine, paralyzed from the neck down." Learn his story on the blog: s.si.edu/IronLung (Link in our profile.) For the next 4 days, we're taking a closer look at antibodies—since they're always looking out for us. ? ? #HistMed #MedHist #Polio #AmericanHistory #MedicalHistory #STEMhistory #HistSTEM #DiseasePrevention #Vaccine #Vaccination #Antibody #Antibodies #AntibodiesWeek #IronLung #HistTech
