That isn’t lip gloss or perfume within this small gold case. It is wax that was meant to hold something far more precious: a scab. The ornate chasing upon the case’s hinged lid reveals the owner’s name, "Dr. F. E.Chatard." Dr. Chatard practiced medicine in Baltimore during the mid-1800s. With his lovely gold case, Dr.Chatard could easily (and so stylishly) carry a scab containing vaccinia virus, which he would use to inoculate his patients against smallpox. The wax, tightly sealed in the case, would help keep the scab slightly moist, a necessary condition to ensure that its viral treasure remained potent.
This is just one of the awesomely odd objects we can related to smallpox eradication. Browse the others here: http://s.si.edu/spox (Link in our profile.) Today's our last day of #AntibodiesWeek. Did you enjoy learning about medicine and science of the past? Our team of Medicine and Science curators sincerely enjoyed sharing the stories of #antibody-based innovation with you!
