Known as "the scourge of childhood," the bacterial disease diphtheria was truly horrible. Symptoms include the growth of a pseudomembrane in the throat making breathing difficult. Before 1890, this handsome kit provided the most effective medical answer for surviving. Intubation was an early treatment for the disease. This set (dating to between 1886-1891) contains gold-plated O'Dwyer's intubation tubes, a mouth gag to keep the patient's mouth open, an introducer tool to insert the tube, and an extractor tool to remove it. ???? In 1890, an effective treatment for diphtheria—antitoxin—was discovered by Shibasaburo Kitasato and Emil von Behring in Germany. Pharmaceutical companies and public health agencies quickly began to produce the new serum therapy in earnest. ➡️ Learn more about "the strangling angel:" http://s.si.edu/cyadiphtheria (Link in profile.) ⬅️ Think this is gross?
