Hi! ? I’m the Great Historical Clock of America. While I no longer tell time, I’ve been told that you gained an hour today. What to do with that extra time? Admire my majesty, of course! OBVIOUSLY!
I’m quite impressive at 13 feet tall. Monumental clocks like me were a spectacular but, alas, short-lived phenomenon that traveled from town to town in the late 1800s. U.S. clockmakers showed off their craft by packing all our surfaces with elaborate ornaments, astronomical indicators, and celebrated figures from the American past. Yes, I’m beautiful!
But I also move. Via complex machinery, I once delighted audiences across the nation with moving scenes from American History. I’m a veritable 1800s civics lesson! Some of my favorite scenes I offer: a procession of U.S. presidents (from George Washington through Benjamin Harrison), Paul Revere's ride, a then-famous steamboat plying the waters, Niagara Falls, Christopher Columbus arriving in the New World, and Pocahontas pleading for the life of John Smith.

Want to come admire me in person? I’m on display in “American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith," where I am absolutely the best thing on view.
