Art Deco jewellery was the visual embodiment of modernist principles. The movement emerged at the end of World War One and its emphasis on structure and clean lines responded to a desire for order in the wake of chaos.

‘While Art Deco designers came from diverse backgrounds, they all held the same ideal: to make a clean break from the past, draw inspiration from everyday life and rid the decorative arts of useless ornamentation,’ says historian Laurence Mouillefarine.
