Imagine this with flames shooting out of it. Supporters of Abraham Lincoln's presidential campaign perfected the nighttime torchlight parade as an entertainment of unprecedented scale. The concept originated in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1858, and was revived for Lincoln's campaign by the city’s young Republicans.
Marchers wore oil-resistant cloth capes. Many of them were too young to vote but were swept up in the spectacle. Their example spread from Hartford to cities in the northeastern United States. ????✅ You probably don’t need a fancy eagle torch to light the way to your voting location, Instagram friends. But we hope you have a good #ElectionDay and get to wear your “I voted” sticker proudly, whether you’re voting for mayor, governor, or ballot measures in your state today!
