Photo by @Tim Laman. A pristine river flows through the Batang Toru rain forest in Sumatra. This is the home of the newly described Tapanuli Orangutan, and there are only about 110,000 hectares of habitat remaining for the Tapanuli Orangutans, according to the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Project (@socp.official), that has been studying this population of orangutans since 2005. This newly recognized species, Pongo tapanuliensis, is sadly automatically the most endangered great ape, with its small population of only 800 or less. Hopefully this new attention to this important population of orangutans will galvanize the efforts of Indonesian government and conservation groups to safeguard this area.
