The Madagascar big headed turtle is one of the most endangered turtles in the world. They are highly threatened by habitat fragmentation and siltation caused as lakes are converted into rice fields. As their name suggests, these turtles have rather large heads in proportion to their bodies. Their necks are also quite long-- so long in fact that they must bend sideways inside their shell as the turtles pull their heads inward. However, this long neck benefits the turtle by allowing them access to fresh air while keeping the rest of their bodies safe underwater.
