These red lacquer jugs are intricately decorated with dragons. They were made in China and used to serve Tibetan butter tea. Lacquer is the toxic sap from the Chinese lacquer tree. It’s filtered and heated to make it safe, and then applied in layers onto an object. Each layer takes 24 hours to dry, and elaborately carved lacquer objects may require 100 layers!
