Shiva is one of the main deities in Hinduism – Shiva's role is to destroy the universe in order to recreate it. In this finely detailed bronze statue, the god is dancing within a ring of flame, crushing ignorance underfoot while marking both the beginning and the end of each cosmic cycle. This sculpture was made around 1100 in southern India. It’s an example of the lost-wax techniques of sculpture production, which were honed in this area between the 8th and 13th century.
