‘The Kiss’ is one of Auguste Rodin’s most famous works. Made in 1882, it was inspired by a moment in Italian writer Dante Alighieri’s epic poem The Divine Comedy. Dante meets the lovers Paolo and Francesca in his travels around hell. They had been murdered by Francesca’s husband (Paolo’s brother) after he discovered the lovers together. The sculpture sees them at the moment just before death, lost in reckless passion. The sculpture was soon detached from its literary reference, and became a more general image of a kiss – a passionate and private moment. Rodin sought to capture the essence of his models, and give them a new form, rather than rigidly copy from nature. Whether the viewer knows the literary origins of this work or not, the sculpture casts us in the role of voyeur.
