In Erie, Pennsylvania, one city block is a trek of disrespect. The McBride Viaduct,a graffiti-scrawled bridge, links 2 of the city’s poorest neighborhoods. When it opened in the late 1930s, Erie was growing. The bridge, which is also called the East Avenue Bridge, was an emblem of local pride and progress. Then the factories started disappearing. In more recent years, the debate over the fate of the crumbling bridge has focused a spotlight on Erie’s legacy of disenfranchisement and its troubled race relations. More than a few residents walk or bike across it because, as one said, “it’s still the safest, shortest route” over the tracks. Still, Erie officials are poised to tear the bridge down, insisting that the cost of its repair and maintenance is simply prohibitive. “The viaduct doesn’t seem important to people in City Hall. But for people looking to get ahead, it is not a side issue,” said Gary Horton, who directs the Erie chapter of the NAACP. “It’s about hope.” @damonwinter took this photo of the bridge on a recent snowy evening in Erie.
