More than 200,000 people have fled Afrin in recent days to escape a Turkish-led military offensive against a Kurdish militia. Despite criticism by the United States and Europe of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s eight-week offensive, Turkish forces and allied Syrian militiamen seized Afrin on March 18. According to the Associated Press, Erdogan vowed the next day to expand military operations into other Kurdish-held areas in Syria and potentially into neighboring Iraq.
