@NMAAHC here with another #HiddenHerstory! Many people learn about the Dred Scott case (Scott v. Sanford) when Scott, an enslaved man, sued for his freedom. But Harriet Robinson Scott, his wife who was also enslaved, petitioned the court for her freedom alongside her husband.

The couple filed two separate cases that were later combined, and fought for their freedom in Missouri courts for more than 10 years. They had lived in free states and territories, and challenged the courts to grant them their freedom.
Eventually, the case reached the U. S. Supreme Court. On March 6, 1857, the court ruled that no black person was a citizen and therefore had no right to sue. This ruling also deemed that no person of African descent could vote, travel or marry of their own free will.
The dramatic ripple effect of the Dred Scott case threatened the re-enslavement of any black person, regardless of residence in a free or slave state. #WomensHistoryMonth ?: The State Historical Society of Missouri
