In Hawaii, one of our scientists uses cryo-technology to keep fragile coral species from going extinct.
Mary Hagedorn (of the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, part of @スミソニアン国立動物園) and her team have created a world-class genomic library and frozen repository that includes 16 species from two of the world’s major oceans.

These are like banks for biological samples, providing a safeguard against extinction for coral species facing the damaging effects of climate change, disease and loss of genetic diversity.

They're also pioneering cryo-technology (which uses very low temperatures) to include additional types of tissues, such as the eggs and embryos of aquatic animals, that couldn't be banked before.
Leading up to Earth Day, we're telling conservation success stories on Twitter with #EarthOptimism2018, and invite you to share yours with #ImAnEarthOptimistBecause.
