Since Apollo 17 astronauts captured this photo in 1972, it has become a symbol of #EarthDay.
The astronauts had the Sun behind them when they took the image of the planet, fully lit, on the way to the Moon. Sometimes called the “blue marble,” it's the first time the whole Earth was photographed.

Along with other images of Earth taken from space, the photo inspired people to see the planet in a new way—a small blue body of life suspended in a dark void. It became the rallying cry of environmental activists, politicians and scientists during the annual Earth Day celebrations. ?: NASA
