Swipe to see the full picture → Baby Kadia didn’t cry when she was born. She weighed very little and had a high fever. Her mother, 17-year-old Mariam, was worried she might pass away. Access to antibiotics and quality care at a UNICEF-supported health centre in #Mali helped save Kadia’s life. “I was in good health during the entire pregnancy. I was so happy to have her. I had wanted one for a long time,” said Mariam. “But she wasn’t well. She felt very warm to the touch and wouldn’t drink my milk. I was scared when she wouldn’t latch on. When I asked the nurses, “What’s happening to her?” the nurses said, “She’s tired, let her try again. Give her some time.” But early Monday morning, something was wrong. Her body was so hot and she still wouldn’t drink. She would only sleep. She had been lying next to me in bed the whole weekend. I didn’t sleep through a single night. My mother-in-law and I thought the baby would die. I didn’t want her ‘to go back yet’, as we say here. When we got [to the clinic], they gave her an injection of antibiotics , and something to lower the fever. They hospitalized her. I felt relieved when she was treated. If I hadn’t come, she would have died. Now I can sleep; I feel better, and my baby feels calmer, too. She drinks my milk now. It relieves me. I have a lot of milk and it hurt, but now that she drinks, it feels better. They told me to keep the baby at my chest to keep her warm. That will help her heal and gain weight. In the coming years, I hope she grows older and that she won’t have any more problems with her health.” To help more babies like Kadia sign our petition!
